One of the things that I believe new players find difficult to deal with is the "what do you mean I don't get SP from killing rats?" issue. I myself found it to be a refreshing change from the "exp" grind/ dungeon crawl...that is so common in other MMORPGs.
(...and no there are no +1,000 auto-cannons of pwning in EVE either...sorry.)

No just " Estamels Modified .... " or "Pithum X-Type .. " which is a bit the same.

According to some QEN the average player/char is 7 months old. And also according to QEN around 80% of the population run around high sec.
That means, after reaching those PvE goals (running LvL4's in a T2 BS) most people quit.. probably of boredom.
They don't want to PvP (yeah, some really only play to relax and enjoy some scifi-setting for that) and all that's offered to them is kill never changing 'xyz' there, bring never changing 'abc' back from this, rinse repeat.
If you want growing customer numbers make PvE more entertaining (read: put sleeper AI into those dumb NPC and make the encounter more like PvP, so the pilot comming from one field doesn't have to reinvent himself when he enters the other playstyle).
That is a very interesting perspective on things.
